Speech is more than mouth movement—it is a complex neurological process involving language, motor planning, coordination, breathing, voice, and sensory feedback.
The brain thinks and understands, plans the message, programs the movements, and coordinates the muscles needed for speech. Broca’s area, language networks, motor cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, brainstem, and cranial nerves all contribute.
Think → Plan → Program → Move → Speak → Adjust
For therapists, the key is to look beyond the speech error and identify where the difficulty originates—language, motor planning, movement, coordination, sensory processing, or neurological function.
Understanding the brain helps us understand the communication difficulty—and support the person, not just the symptom.
