We-Rise founder, Steve, was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. When he went looking for support, he came up short.

His journey inspired him to create an event series where men impacted by prostate cancer could come together and learn from each other about how to continue living life to the fullest.

Few men are aware of the disease and even fewer talk about it, but that is something Steve Ashby is determined to change

Saw my brother John yesterday on his way back to New Zealand. He's been in the insurance business 35 years, putting custom packages together for large organisations. Some clients have become friends. He said in his considerable experience of dealing with cancer sufferers, positive mental attitude is EVERYTHING.

He asked me the same question he asks all his clients with cancer. "How long are you going to live, Steve?" I said til I'm 100. He said that almost without exception, the people who give him that exact same answer are still alive and kicking, some even 25 years later.

On the flip side, he cited an example of a client/friend who had a double mastectomy and needed 16 rounds of radiation.

After 12 sessions, she said to my brother John, "John, I'm tired... I don't think I can take much more." He tried to convince her that she was well over half way and the treatment was working but she didn't/couldn't keep fighting. She died 3 months later.

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men. We-Rise is dedicated to raising awareness, providing support, and cataloguing resources to help men and their families battle through their journeys.

Men facing prostate cancer can struggle with their sense of self and feelings of isolation. It’s the aim of We-Rise to remind them that they have a community here that they can lean on, and to advise their loved ones on how they can best support the men in their lives.

We-Rise also encourages men to advocate for their health. It’s never too early to check your PSA score, but it can be too late. Early detection is the key to prevention - all you have to do is ask.
